The volume of data around the globe is significantly increasing and are projected to continue to increase by 40 per cent every year. In the transport sector, together with the emergence of smart transport systems, the data revolution has already been initiated. Advances in data processing and analysis now make it possible to utilize transport big data from smart transport systems for more reliable, efficient and evidence-based decision-making in transport policies and strategies for sustainable development. Recognizing these benefits, the Regional Action Programme for Sustainable Transport Development in Asia and the Pacific (2022-2026), adopted at the fourth session of the Ministerial Conference on Transport in December 2021, identified “Digitalization of Transport” as one of key thematic areas. The utilization of smart transport technologies and transport big data is part of indicators of achievement under this key thematic area.

With the above in mind, and as a follow-up to the Expert Group Meeting on Promoting the Utilization of Transport Big Data from Smart Transport Systems in the Asia-Pacific Region for the Achievement of Sustainable Transport, held on 12-13 July 2023, Transport Division is organizing the workshop to increase the technical capacity of policy makers in member States in East and North-East Asia and North and Central Asia on utilizing smart transport technologies and transport big data for data-driven transport policies and strategies.
