Regional Steering Group on Population and Social Statistics

In endorsing the Implementation Plan of the Regional Strategy to Improve Population and Social Statistics in Asia and the Pacific, the Committee on Statistics of ESCAP, at its fifth session in December 2016, also agreed to establish a Regional Steering Group (RSG) to oversee the implementation of the Regional Strategy to achieve its vision, “the countries of Asia and the Pacific have the capacity to produce, disseminate, and use the core set of population and social statistics by 2030.”

The Regional Steering Group on Population and Social Statistics (RSG-PSS) was established in 2017, comprising member countries (NSOs), development partners and ESCAP Statistics Division as the secretariat.

A Technical Advisory Group (TAG) was established by the ESCAP Committee on Statistics to provide recommendations on strategies, as well as substantive and methodological guidelines for achieving goals in the area of population and social statistics. As a first step, the TAG developed a core set of population and social statistics covering 11 domains of social concern that might reasonably be expected to be available by 2020 for all countries of the region. The core set was endorsed by the Committee on Statistics at its third session in December 2012 and subsequently by the ESCAP Commission in resolution 69/16 as a guide to focus national and regional efforts to improve the scope of core population and social statistics in the region.

The TAG also considered the key elements and attributes of a national statistical system required for sustainable capacity to produce the core statistics. With the assistance of experts, the TAG developed this Capacity Framework for population and social statistics which is intended to guide national and regional actions for capacity building.
